This project is a typographic exploration that reimagines the traditional dictionary through a culturally and visually rich design approach. Focusing on the "Hobson-Jobson" dictionary, an old collection of Anglo-Indian words adapted by the British during their colonization of India, the project presents these words through three distinct modes of expression, each steeped in historical and cultural context.
Together, these modes of expression form a multifaceted narrative that blends typographic innovation with a deep cultural and historical awareness, offering a unique perspective on the history of colonialism through language.
Matchboxes
Inspired by the rich visual history of Indian matchbox art, each matchbox represents a single word, with English on one side and Hindi on the other. Inside, the full meaning and context of the word are revealed, shedding light on the linguistic impact of colonization.The cover showcases a generic illustration of the word.
Railway Tickets
Drawing from the British-introduced railway system in India, which was originally designed to facilitate colonial exploitation, these tickets are modeled after actual Indian railway tickets. The content features Indian-origin words that were officially added to the Oxford Dictionary in 2018, connecting past and present linguistic influences.
First Day Covers
These covers highlight Indian-origin English words as referenced in literature and cinema. They serve as a tribute to the enduring presence of these words in global culture.
